Alfredo Falvo spent a month in the Democratic Republic of Congo, reporting its coltan mines in Kisengo, a village set in the heart of Katanga. All the inhabitants are linked to the extraction of coltan, a conductor used in order to optimize the electric consumption in new generation chips. The miners, many of which are children, extract coltan working day and night, in horizontal tunnels about 10 metres long, without safety measures, unaware that coltan is a radioactive mineral. The images of the reportage have been published by El Paìs Semanal.

Fabio Cuttica has been working on cocaine fields in Colombia as well as on the so-called “erradicadores”, a Spanish word that means “the destroyers”, refers to the daily activity of over 3000 Columbian peasants, former coffee pickers, that are now undertaking to unroot the thousands of cocaine plants that grow in the most dangerous areas of Columbia. One of his pictures has been chosen by Newsweek to illustrate an article on coca traffickers.

Twenty-five stories and ten symbol places for the industry, among the others the Thyssenkrupp in Turin, the former Goodyear factory in Cisterna di Latina, Priolo petrochemical plant in Sicily. Places that should be about self-fulfillment and social redemption, not spots where the eventuality of dying or being maimed forever has to be averted on a daily basis.
