Iraqi Kurdistan by Davide Monteleone on Eight
Tuesday, 14 July 2009
Kurdish civilians have suffered and are still suffering the consequences of the war, even many years after its official end. Smuggling petrol from the border of Iran has become one of the only means of income, with smugglers paid US$22 per trip for carrying four to six jerry cans of petrol back into Iraq. Kurd fighters, the Peshmerga, who fought with US forces in the beginning of the war, still have a presence in the region, training and fighting for recognition their homeland.
Sulaimaniya, in Iraqi Kurdistan bordering Turkey and Iran, is one of the most densely landmined areas in the world and during last three decades has been the scene of incessant internal and international conflicts. In 1998 the Emergency Rehabilitation and Social Reintegration Centre was established to help the numerous amputees living without prosthesis or assistance – who can’t work and have insufficient means for themselves and their families – issues that victims of Saddam Hussein's 1988 gas attack are still struggling with today, as a peaceful life after war remains a distant hop.
The reportage shot by Davide Monteleone has been published
online by Eight, as "story of the week" (to view the story, click here).

Bolivian Navy by Fabio Cuttica on L' Espresso
Thursday, 09 July 2009
Most countries without shorelines have given up the idea of having a navy. Bolivia is the exception, having lost its access to the ocean in 1884 but not the idea of keeping a navy. In 1879 Chile declared war against Peru and its ally Bolivia. Thus began the War of the Pacific, which ended with Peru and Bolivia on the losing end. Nowadays, Bolivia and Peru share a huge, navigable lake, the Titicaca.
The issue of a Bolivian access to the sea is a hoary problem. For many years the Bolivian and Chilean governments have been trying to find a solution as it would allow many benefits, not only under an economic point of view, to Evo Morales’ country. In spite of this, the Navy is considered a serious Institution, respected in the whole Bolivia: it is also the pride of the nation, joined by more than 15,000 people among midshipmen and naval officers.
The reportage shot by Fabio Cuttica and the text by Diletta Varlese have been published on L'Espresso.

South Ossetia by Davide Monteleone on Ventiquattro
Monday, 06 July 2009
August the 8th 2008: Georgia attacks and invades South Ossetia. The justification for such a behaviour is that Georgia strongly wants to restore the order in the separatist republic. Russia’s reaction doesn’t delay and in few days it consolidates its military post in Tskhinvali, while the Russian army breaks through the Georgian territory, all the way to the city of Gori. This is the beginning of new tensions in the Caucasus area.
This reportage, shot by Davide Monteleone and published by Ventiquattro, narrates the situation in South Ossetia after the Russian-Georgian conflict.
