Frontera Sur

Frontera Sur is multi-platform project that aims to recount the migratory phenomenon around the European southern border. Gianfranco Tripodo utilizes pictures, videos and audio interviews in order to tell the path that many migrants, mostly from the sub-saharan african region, undertake to enter into the two exclaves of Ceuta and Melilla. This long term project is a direct proof of the circumstances that have happened during the last years around the fence that divides Europe and Africa and it tells the stories of the many people who have tried, and sometimes succed, to pass the border.

Gianfranco Tripodo was born in 1981 in Manila, the Philippines.
His work seamlessly navigates between documentary and portrait photography. Raised in Naples, he obtained his degree in Media Science at the University of Bologna in 2002. Since 2005 he has lived in Madrid, Spain, where he began his photographic career. He has worked on assignment for the most prominent magazines and newspapers in the world.
He always had a genuine interest in the migratory issues and in 2010 he embarked in a documentary project aiming to record the dramatic situation of the sub-saharan migrants in Ceuta and Melilla, the two Spanish enclaves in Morocco. This work gained several prizes and recognitions like the World Press Photo – Single image, Spot News category, it was finalist of the
